Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, has revealed that suspected Boko Haram members and other criminals were previously discovered on recruitment lists for the Nigerian Army and Police. Speaking during a special plenary session on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Wase warned that such infiltration poses a serious threat to national security.
Representing Wase Federal Constituency in Plateau State, he noted that his claims could be corroborated by Hon. Muktar Betara, former Chairman of the House Committee on Defence. According to Wase, past recruitment exercises shockingly included the names of known terrorists, armed robbers, and individuals with criminal records. He cautioned political actors against endorsing unverified candidates, emphasizing that only trustworthy and credible individuals should be considered for security positions.
Sharing personal insight, Wase recounted losing a brother, cousin, and nephew to terrorist attacks. He highlighted that the North Central region carries nearly 52 percent of the nation’s security burden, citing distress calls from relatives seeking relocation due to persistent attacks. He also urged the Federal Government to reassess the directive withdrawing police from VIP protection, arguing that clear categories must be defined to avoid endangering key officials.
Other lawmakers weighed in on Nigeria’s worsening insecurity. Sada Soli, speaking for the North West Caucus, described the situation as “complex,” driven by criminality, environmental pressures, weak governance, and economic hardship. For the North East, Betara noted that the region remains the epicentre of terrorism, referencing tragedies such as the 2015 Baga massacre and repeated bomb attacks. South South representatives, led by Solomon Bob, criticized successive governments for lacking the political will to tackle insecurity, while Kafilat Ogbara condemned recent mass abductions of women and children in Papiri and Kamba.
