Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, arguing that the measures announced do not address the root causes of Nigeria’s worsening security challenges. His remarks were made during a television interview on Thursday, according to a report by Vanguard on November 28, 2025.
President Tinubu had ordered the recruitment of tens of thousands of new security personnel across the Armed Forces, alongside a directive for the Nigeria Police Force to enlist at least 20,000 officers. These steps followed a surge in bandit attacks, kidnappings, and rural violence in several parts of the country.
Baba-Ahmed, however, described the recruitment-focused strategy as inadequate. He argued that corruption within the security system — not a shortage of manpower — remains the major obstacle to restoring peace. He questioned how much of Nigeria’s security funding actually reaches frontline operations, alleging that diversion of resources and political interference continue to weaken the sector.
The former senator insisted that a properly reformed and well-funded police force could achieve significant security improvements without excessive reliance on the military. According to him, “Give me a reformed Nigerian Police that is free from corruption and political interference, and within two months insecurity will be history.”
