Senator Ali Ndume has urged the federal government to urgently upgrade welfare provisions for Nigerian soldiers, describing current conditions as inadequate given the risks faced by troops nationwide. The appeal was made during a Senate plenary on Thursday, November 27, 2025, focused on addressing funding gaps within the armed forces, according to Channels TV.
Ndume highlighted the difficult realities confronting soldiers deployed to volatile regions, where insurgency, banditry, and other security threats pose constant dangers. He stressed that improving welfare is essential not only for boosting morale but also for enhancing the military’s operational effectiveness, as well-supported troops are better prepared to tackle national security challenges.
The senator specifically called for a review of pay for junior personnel, who form the bulk of frontline soldiers. He revealed that a private in the Nigerian Army currently earns ₦100,000 per month, while daily operational allowances, previously ₦1,500, have been increased to ₦5,000 by presidential directive. Ndume insisted, however, that further improvements are necessary to ensure adequate support for troops serving under harsh conditions.
