Less Than 5% Nigerian Benefit From NASS Budget ; Why Dont We Shut All Use Money To Secure People—Ndume

Borno South Senator Ali Ndume has urged the Federal Government to redirect funds from certain government operations to strengthen security across Nigeria. Speaking on Friday, November 28, 2025, Ndume suggested scaling down discretionary spending, including some activities of the National Assembly, to free resources for protecting citizens, according to Daily Post.

The senator proposed that lawmakers meet less frequently, perhaps quarterly, with salaries adjusted to reflect reduced sitting schedules. He emphasized that public funds should prioritize the majority of Nigerians rather than recurrent overheads that benefit only a small fraction of the population.

“We sit for some time depending on the workload that we have, and are paid accordingly. And now, the 2025 budget is not running; we are in 2025, but the recurrent and overhead costs are running, and who is benefitting? Less than five per cent of Nigerians, and it is a lot of money. So, why don’t we shut down all these things and use the money to secure the people first?” Ndume said.

He stressed that legislative duties could continue without unnecessary expenditure and urged tough decisions to ensure that government resources are spent where they matter most, particularly on public safety. Ndume argued that a shift from high-cost bureaucratic operations to practical security measures is essential given the growing insecurity in Nigeria.
