Bishop Bulus Yohanna of the Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has recounted the harrowing attack by armed bandits on St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, where both students and teachers were abducted. Speaking to Channels TV, the bishop described the incident as a terrifying night for the school community.
According to Bishop Yohanna, the bandits first attempted to break into the residence of the Catholic sisters working at the school. “I think the first attempt was to see if they could break through where the sisters are living. That didn’t happen. They were not able to break the place because when they came to the gate, they were asking where the sisters live. The gate man told them the sisters work there but do not live on the premises,” he said.
When the attackers were denied access to the convent, they reportedly became violent, shooting the gatekeeper and forcing entry through a secondary gate leading directly to the school. Bishop Yohanna explained that the bandits then targeted the students’ dormitory. “Eventually, they went to the hostel where we have the dormitory and the children. They shot into the air, and everyone became scared,” he added.
Many students attempted to flee into nearby bushes, but the assailants succeeded in abducting several students and teachers. The bishop described the ordeal as heartbreaking and urged for stronger security measures to safeguard schools and other vulnerable communities.
