Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has asserted that Nigeria possessed the ability to identify and track criminals anywhere in the country before he left office. Speaking in a video shared by AIT, Obasanjo explained that the main challenge during his tenure was not locating offenders but capturing them, which required deploying security forces by land or air.
Obasanjo highlighted that with modern technology, particularly drones, security agencies now have more effective ways to tackle crime without endangering personnel. He questioned why such tools are not being fully utilised to address the nation’s growing insecurity.
“Before I left government, I know we had capacity to pick up anybody in Nigeria who commits crime anywhere. The capacity that we didn’t have then is that after we identified and located such a criminal, we had no way to apprehend them without moving on land or by air. Now we have capacity; with drones you can take them out. Why are we not doing that? Why are we apologising, why are we negotiating?” he asked.
Obasanjo’s remarks underscore the urgent need for technological integration in security operations and a more decisive approach to combating crime.
