The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Oji River in Enugu State, Rt. Rev. Ikechukwu Egbuonu, has disclosed details of his recent visit to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Facility. Speaking to DailyPost, the Bishop said the encounter revealed several pressing concerns Kanu is facing while in detention.
According to Egbuonu, Kanu expressed worries about his heart condition and the difficulty of managing his legal appeal from Sokoto, given the long distance from Abuja where his court processes are handled. Despite these concerns, the Bishop noted that Kanu appeared calm, composed, and mentally alert throughout their conversation.
Kanu reportedly explained that he needs access to Abuja to update his case documents at the High Court before filing his appeal, for which he has a 90-day deadline. He was also troubled by delays in speaking with his legal team, saying he has not been granted the chance to address an important issue they raised. “I feel bad about not being able to talk to them,” he was quoted as saying.
Addressing speculation that Kanu had dismissed his lawyers, Bishop Egbuonu clarified that the narrative is inaccurate. He said Kanu did not sack his legal representatives but chose to lead his own defence while relying on them strictly as consultants. The Bishop added that the legal team remains fully involved and was even present during his visit, maintaining ongoing communication with him.
