GNB:It Was So Bad, The Day That I Landed,A Military Man Slapped The Prime Minister In The Office–GEJ

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has raised concerns over the political situation in Guinea-Bissau, highlighting signs of renewed military interference that echo the nation’s turbulent past. Jonathan’s remarks came during a recent visit as part of an international election observation team, with footage shared by SYMFONI TV.

Recalling the country’s history of instability, Jonathan referenced the tense political climate of 2010 and 2011, when regional leaders repeatedly intervened to restore order. He recounted a personal experience during one of his visits, saying he arrived to find a soldier had entered the prime minister’s office and physically assaulted him—a moment that underscored the unchecked influence of the military at the time.

Jonathan expressed concern that current developments appear to mirror these past crises. While recent elections were largely peaceful and observers reported no major irregularities, the situation escalated when the military announced a coup. He suggested the move seemed more like a symbolic show of force than an actual seizure of power.

He urged regional bodies, including the African Union and ECOWAS, to take prompt action to prevent Guinea-Bissau from sliding back into political instability. Reflecting on the gravity of prior events, he stated: “It was so bad that on the day I arrived, a soldier walked into the prime minister’s office and slapped him. What we’re seeing now feels like a return to those dark days in Guinea-Bissau.”
