37 Katsina Villagers Freed as Community-Led Peace Talks Bear Fruit

In a positive development for areas affected by banditry, 37 villagers from Bakori Local Government Area in Katsina State have regained their freedom following weeks of captivity. The release, reported by The Punch on Saturday, November 29, 2025, was achieved through a peace agreement brokered between local community leaders and the captors.

Abdulraham Kandarawa, the lawmaker representing Bakori, confirmed that the hostages were freed without any ransom being paid. The captives, held in a neighboring area of Zamfara State, were released as part of the truce. Among those freed were 17 women, two infants, and 18 men.

This marks the second successful release under this community-led initiative, bringing the total number of villagers freed to 82. Lawmaker Kandarawa emphasized that the negotiations were rooted in a mutual commitment to peace, urging all citizens to embrace non-violence. He expressed gratitude that the bandits honored their promise.

While the initiative has been welcomed, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda has reiterated that the government was not directly involved in the talks. He clarified that the peace process is entirely community-driven but praised its success in restoring calm to the affected regions.
