Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has urged regional bodies to investigate former President Goodluck Jonathan’s account of the recent political crisis in Guinea-Bissau, describing the claims as serious allegations that cannot be ignored.
In a post on his official X handle on Saturday, November 29, 2025, Sani referenced Jonathan’s interview, where the former Nigerian president suggested that the reported coup attempt in Guinea-Bissau may have been staged. Jonathan alleged that President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who was later declared deposed during the unrest, orchestrated the event to conceal his electoral defeat and prevent the handover of power to the opposition.
Sani warned that if Jonathan’s narrative is accurate, it signals a dangerous new tactic in African politics: a manufactured coup aimed at undermining election outcomes and retaining power under the pretense of instability. “This is a weighty allegation that calls for investigation and action by ECOWAS and the African Union so that it doesn’t become the norm on the continent,” he posted.
The senator urged both ECOWAS and the African Union to conduct an independent probe, emphasizing that electoral credibility and democratic transitions in West Africa are at stake. He stressed that leaders should not be allowed to weaponize instability for personal political survival.
Sani’s remarks add to ongoing discussions following Jonathan’s revelations, which have sparked debate over the true circumstances of the unrest in Guinea-Bissau and its wider implications for democracy in the region.
