My brother was killed over a phone that was never stolen_ Cousin

A 28-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Chukwuebuka Ofor, was killed by a mob in Enugu after being wrongly accused of stealing a passenger’s phone, according to a report by The Punch Newspaper on Saturday, 29 November 2025.

The incident occurred at New Haven in Enugu metropolis on Thursday evening. Witnesses reported that a woman alighted from Ofor’s motorcycle and claimed her phone was missing. Before verification, a crowd attacked him with sticks, stones, and iron rods.

Ofor’s cousin, Ifeanyi Ofor, told journalists that the accusation was false. “My brother was killed over a phone that was never stolen. The woman later found the phone inside her own bag, but by then my brother was already dead,” he said.

The victim, a father of one from Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, had relocated to Enugu only two weeks earlier to earn a living for his family. His elder sister, Chioma Ofor, described him as hardworking and honest. Ofor was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, and his body has been deposited at the mortuary.

The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident. Police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe said investigations have commenced, with efforts ongoing to arrest those responsible. Residents have expressed outrage over the case, warning against taking the law into one’s own hands and urging reliance on security agencies to handle criminal allegations.
