Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, has shared that his father initially disapproved of his decision to pursue a career in comedy, according to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
In an interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus explained that his father had hoped he would become a lawyer. After failing to secure admission into law school, Sabinus studied Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, where he discovered his talent for comedy and began creating skits. “It was on the campus that I saw skit making and I decided to try it out. Money wasn’t coming,” he recalled.
He revealed that his father only learned about his comedy work after graduation. “After I graduated, my dad never knew I was a comedian because I was hiding it. It was one more year after school that he started seeing me on comedy show posters. My sisters confirmed to him that I was into comedy. He was very furious. He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer,’” Sabinus said.
Despite his father’s initial anger, Sabinus eventually won him over by earning from his skits and supporting his family with part of his income. Over time, his father recognized the value of his career choice and gave his blessings.
