During a recent interview on Signature TV, Right Reverend Ikechukwu Egbuonu spoke openly about the lesser-known personal history of Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto maximum correctional facility. The bishop noted that Kanu was born and raised within the Anglican tradition, a part of his identity many Nigerians may not be aware of.
According to Bishop Egbuonu, Kanu’s late parents faced intense pressure and attacks in their community during heightened tensions surrounding the Biafra agitation. He explained that the couple, both devoted Anglicans, passed away amid these disturbances, leaving behind a family already navigating trauma. The Anglican Church, he added, took responsibility for giving them a dignified burial when the situation became overwhelming for the family.
The bishop also recounted his recent visit to Kanu in detention, describing him as calm, reflective, and still deeply concerned about the welfare of his people. Despite his personal losses and the challenges of incarceration, Kanu reportedly maintained a composed outlook.
Egbuonu stressed that the Igbo community continues to feel a profound sense of grief—not only over Kanu’s imprisonment but also over the tragic circumstances that affected his family. He urged leaders to seek unity, justice, and a fair approach in addressing broader regional grievances. Your phone could be secretly spying on you.
