Prince Adewole Adebayo, former Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, has questioned the effectiveness of President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency and the plan to recruit more army and police personnel. He described the move as largely academic, unlikely to address the deeper challenges confronting Nigeria’s security sector.
Adebayo pointed out that since the Boko Haram insurgency began in 2008, successive administrations have declared security emergencies without implementing the necessary structures or follow-up measures. He said the current initiative mirrors past efforts that focused on addressing surface issues rather than the systemic weaknesses within Nigeria’s security apparatus.
According to Adebayo, Nigeria’s security problems are rooted in command and control inefficiencies rather than the number of officers available. He emphasised that operational coordination, leadership quality, and troop morale are far more critical to effective security operations than simply adding personnel.
He highlighted the importance of motivating and supporting troops on the frontline, noting that accessible leadership and clear communication improve morale and field performance. Adebayo also stressed that successful counter-insurgency efforts require meaningful engagement with local communities, which fosters trust, prevents attacks, and limits the influence of criminal elements.
“As Commander-in-Chief, he must make himself accessible to the armed forces and motivate the troops. We are fighting an insurgency, and that requires deeper engagement with communities—more than terrorists or bandits can achieve,” Adebayo said. Your phone could be secretly spying on you.
