Gumi Does What He Feels Should Be Done Cause He Found That There’s no Leadership in Nigeria — Sowore

Activist and Sahara Reporters founder Omoyele Sowore has offered a controversial perspective on Islamic cleric Sheikh Gumi’s interactions with bandits and terrorists, suggesting that Gumi’s actions are driven by a lack of effective national leadership rather than support for criminal activity.

In a video shared on Arise News’ official YouTube channel, Sowore stated, “Sheikh Gumi is doing what he feels should be done because he has found that there’s no leadership in the country to address the issue.” He argued that in the absence of competent government responses to terrorism, non-state actors feel compelled to intervene, often proposing solutions that the state has failed to implement.

Sowore explained that when leadership fails to protect citizens, people turn to anyone offering remedies, regardless of how radical. He noted that Gumi’s proposals, including amnesty programs for bandits, gained traction precisely because of the government’s perceived inaction and lack of political will to resolve the crisis.

The activist distinguished the current security challenges from previous Niger Delta militancy, highlighting that bandits and terrorists take lives indiscriminately and use negotiations to acquire more weapons, making Gumi’s interventions risky despite good intentions.
