They Were Going To Sentence Him To Death That Was The Plan, The Free Kanu Protest Saved Him-Sowore

Human-rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has alleged that the Federal Government initially planned to execute IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, but public pressure and protests helped avert the move.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Sowore explained that Nigerian activists acted swiftly to stage the Free Nnamdi Kanu protest in Abuja, which, alongside international attention, prevented what he described as a looming death sentence. Kanu is currently serving a life imprisonment sentence at the Sokoto Maximum Correctional Centre.

“Maybe we were only lucky that we fought a bit through the Free Nnamdi Kanu protest to have saved Nnamdi Kanu from the hangman’s noose. They were going to sentence him to death—that was the plan—and you can check my Twitter and Facebook posts on November 5 because I was given that information in advance,” Sowore said. He added that authorities were reportedly upset by the protest, which disrupted their original plan.

Sowore noted that credible intelligence indicated Kanu’s fate could have been more severe without the timely mobilisation of activists and sympathisers. He further stressed the importance of continued advocacy to safeguard transparency and human rights in politically sensitive cases in Nigeria.
