Churches Can Seek Protection Legally, Says Ex-PFN President Amid Kidnappings

Former President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Rev. Felix Omobude, has affirmed that churches and Christians have the right to seek protection through legal means in response to rising insecurity. His comments, reported by The PUNCH on Sunday, November 30, 2025, come amid increasing attacks, kidnappings, and threats targeting worshippers across the country.

Speaking in Benin, Edo State, Omobude emphasized the importance of safeguarding congregations without escalating violence. He warned that resorting to arms could worsen the security situation, creating further chaos. “Security measures are now essential to prevent tragedies, but they must remain lawful and responsible,” he stated.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, Omobude noted that few could have predicted the current unrest 15 years ago. He stressed that seeking international assistance to combat terrorism and banditry should not be interpreted as undermining national sovereignty, given the increasing sophistication of insurgents and disruptions to military operations.

During his tenure as PFN president, Omobude advocated for state-level policing, highlighting the inefficiencies of Nigeria’s overly centralised security system. He praised President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in exploring decentralised policing solutions, noting that localised security forces could better protect communities and respond more effectively to emerging threats.

Rev. Omobude’s message underscores the pressing need for proactive security measures for churches and communities nationwide.
