I Saw Some Statistics Today That Said 9 Of The Ambassadors Are From The Southwest -Hakeem Baba Ahmed

Former Arewa Consultative Forum spokesperson and elder statesman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has raised concerns about regional representation in President Bola Tinubu’s recent ambassadorial nominations. Speaking to Channels TV, he argued that the list appears skewed, favoring the Southwest at the expense of other regions.

Citing recent statistics, Baba-Ahmed noted, “I saw some statistics today that said there are about nine of the ambassadors from the Southwest, the president’s zone—and there’s one zone with three, some with five. This is worrying. Merit is good, but in a country like Nigeria, it is not enough. You need to look at the numbers and find out and identify who is coming from where.”

While acknowledging that merit remains an important factor, the elder statesman stressed that Nigeria’s diversity requires equitable distribution of key positions. He warned that overrepresentation from one region could undermine the perception of fairness, especially given the president’s existing investments in the Southwest. “He’s already carrying a burden of investing in the Southwest in proportions that defy the idea of equity and fairness,” he added.

Despite his criticism, Baba-Ahmed commended the president for taking steps to fill Nigeria’s long-vacant diplomatic positions. He urged the National Assembly to thoroughly scrutinize each nominee to ensure that qualified representatives are posted abroad, reflecting both competence and national inclusiveness.
