Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South and former Senate Leader, has shared his perspective on Nigeria’s ongoing security crisis, stressing the need for careful handling of surrendered militants. Speaking to The Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, November 30, 2025, Ndume highlighted the urgency of restoring stability across affected states.
Drawing from his experience as former head of the Senate Committee on the Army, Ndume emphasized that the government must prioritize the safety and welfare of citizens. He noted that insecurity now spans roughly 30 states, impacting much of the North, parts of the West, and the South-East, while the South-West and some South-South states remain relatively calm.
“During war, the issue of integrating perpetrators should not be on the table. What should be on the table is settling the victims first—compensate them, rebuild their communities. If someone surrenders, yes, you don’t shoot them. You take them in, investigate, and extract information. But don’t send such people to fight,” Ndume said, outlining a balanced approach that combines accountability with humane treatment.
He also stressed that government efforts must focus on security and public welfare, even if it means delaying non-essential projects. Ndume warned that protecting citizens and ensuring their welfare should be the primary concern of all levels of government, and that honest feedback to leadership is crucial in tackling insecurity.
