Brigadier General Kingsley Uwa, commander of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, has announced that he and his troops have taken control of key forest zones in Taraba State, extending into communities along the Benue boundary. The operation marks a significant step in dismantling criminal networks that have used these forests as hideouts.
Speaking to Channels Television, General Uwa explained that the army’s strategy focuses on physically occupying the difficult terrain relied upon by bandits for years. A newly established forward operating base deep in the forest will allow soldiers to respond quickly to incidents, intercept fleeing suspects, and disrupt armed group movements across Taraba and Benue.
The general, who personally arrived with his men to commission the base, noted that the deployment is part of broader reconnaissance and clearance missions aimed at weakening criminal networks responsible for attacks that have terrorized rural communities and hampered economic activities like farming and transportation.
Addressing his troops, Gen Uwa emphasized the army’s determination to maintain control over the territory, declaring, “I have come with my men to occupy this forward operating base.” He vowed that criminals would no longer be allowed to regroup or reclaim the forest zones.
Residents of nearby communities welcomed the increased military presence, expressing hope that it will curb kidnappings and frequent assaults on villagers and travellers. The general assured that operations will continue uninterrupted, aiming to secure the entire corridor, protect rural dwellers, and restore long-term peace to Taraba and the adjoining parts of Benue.
