Kenneth Okonkwo, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, as an ambassador.
Okonkwo expressed his concerns on social media on Sunday, November 30, 2025, suggesting that the appointment was a reward for the controversial handling of the 2023 presidential election results. He stated, “There’s no other way to explain the appointment of Prof Yakubu Mahmood as an ambassador except that Tinubu wants to reward him for technical glitch.”
Yakubu’s tenure at INEC, particularly during the 2023 elections, faced significant scrutiny, largely over the technological issues with result transmission. The Commission had promised real-time uploads of polling unit results via its IReV portal to enhance transparency, but technical glitches delayed the posting of presidential election results, while governorship and assembly results were transmitted smoothly.
The delay in publishing primary results, attributed by INEC to technical challenges, drew widespread criticism and became a central issue in legal disputes challenging President Tinubu’s victory. Critics, including Okonkwo, interpret Yakubu’s ambassadorial nomination as a tacit endorsement of INEC’s handling of the contested election.
