Former Malumfashi Local Government vice chairman, Nasiru Abdullahi, has reunited with his community after enduring 103 days in captivity, where he was held in chains and subjected to harsh treatment by bandits.
Residents of Dayi in Malumfashi LGA, Katsina State, welcomed Abdullahi with relief after he was released following a ransom payment. He was immediately taken to the hospital for medical checks. Although visibly weak, doctors confirmed he suffered no major medical complications beyond the physical exhaustion of his ordeal.
Speaking in a video shared by Trust TV, Abdullahi described spending his entire time in captivity shackled, sometimes with both his legs and hands chained. Even when he needed to use the toilet, he had to wait for his captors to throw him a key before unlocking the padlocks. He said the bandits often beat him without provocation, even while pretending to ask harmless questions.
He also recalled a period when water was scarce under extreme heat, leaving him and other hostages desperate. In moments of severe thirst, he resorted to drinking his own urine to stay alive. Despite the trauma, he called on authorities to strengthen engagement between communities and security actors, believing improved communication could help reduce attacks and promote long-term stability.
Abdullahi said simply: “I spent 103 days with chains. There was a time when my legs and hands were chained.”
