Work has officially resumed on the Nyanya–Karshi–Wassa–Apo road in Abuja, a project first awarded in 2011 but abandoned for years. The renewed activity follows last week’s revocation of the previous contract by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike due to prolonged non-performance.
During a site visit on Sunday, Wike inspected ongoing works and received briefings from S.C.C. Nigeria Limited, the new contractor appointed under emergency procurement procedures. Heavy-duty machines were seen grading the road, fixing bad sections, and beginning drainage improvements as construction work picked up immediately after the re-award.
According to the contractors, the current scope of work includes improved drainage culverts, rehabilitation of the existing carriageway, and the installation of solar-powered streetlights. They also assured the minister that the project will be completed within 12 months. The road, which links several key communities in the FCT, has caused years of hardship for residents due to its poor condition.
The renewed construction has generated widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing relief that the long-delayed project is finally receiving attention. Social media users have also circulated videos and screenshots showing ongoing work and sharing their opinions on the minister’s inspection tour.
