I thought Mahmood should have been relaxing in his home or going back to University to Teach— Epelle

Civil society leader Jake Epelle, Founder and CEO of TAF Africa, has raised fresh concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s newly released list of ambassadorial nominees. Speaking in an interview reported by Channels TV on Monday, December 1, 2025, Epelle suggested that the selections were driven more by a small circle of close presidential associates than by merit or broad consultation.

Epelle described the process as “cabal-driven,” arguing that only a handful of insiders influenced the list. He noted that such an approach undermines transparency and weakens public trust in high-level appointments meant to reflect national representation and competence.

He also expressed surprise at the nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Given the intense pressure and controversies surrounding the 2023 general elections, Epelle said he expected Yakubu to take time away from public life, perhaps returning to academia or enjoying a quieter life at home.

According to him, while everyone has the right to pursue public service opportunities, it would not have been unexpected for the former INEC chairman to step back, rest, and reflect after his demanding tenure. He emphasized that his remarks were not personal criticisms but part of a broader call for openness and accountability in federal appointments.

Epelle’s comments add to ongoing national conversations about whether ambassadorial roles are being allocated based on loyalty rather than competence, especially at a time when many Nigerians are calling for reforms in public-sector leadership.
