Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has alleged that supporters of his successor, Governor Monday Okpebholo, were paid to confront him in Manchester, England, leading to injuries sustained by his aide, Albert Obaze. Obaseki claimed that this followed a year of restraint during which he avoided commenting publicly on the current administration.
In a video shared by The Cable on Monday, December 1, 2025, Obaseki described the incident, saying supporters of the governor sang threatening messages and attempted to intimidate him. He said the actions escalated when individuals, allegedly backed by the Edo State government, traveled abroad to confront him physically.
“You sent people singing and threatening me. Go and watch those clips and the kind of things they were saying about me, threatening me. Between the government and the palace. That was not enough, the government paid people to come to Manchester to attack me and they hurt you Albert. So who has started this violence, is it me?” Obaseki stated.
The former governor’s comments highlight ongoing tensions between him and the current administration in Edo, raising questions about political rivalry and security measures for Nigerian leaders abroad.
