Bandits: After crawling for about 500 meters, I stayed hidden and watched what was happening- Victim

A resident of Gidan-Bijimi community in Kawu, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), narrowly escaped abduction during a violent raid by armed bandits that left a 16-year-old boy and six young girls kidnapped.

According to Daily Trust, the attackers, carrying sophisticated weapons, struck the community around 9:37 pm on Wednesday. Gidan-Bijimi shares a border with Marke village in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Mr. Thomas Wahab Sarki, a retired community health worker, told reporters that he appeared to be the primary target. At the time, he was preparing for the funeral of his late elder brother’s wife, who passed away at 96. Sarki explained that after briefly visiting a shop to buy a phone recharge card, he sat under a tree behind his house for network coverage when the attack began.

“I initially thought the first sound I heard was a firecracker thrown by children,” Sarki recounted. “But then I heard men threatening to shoot my son if he tried to escape, and I realized the community was under attack. As soon as I discovered they were bandits, I began crawling into the bush. After crawling for about 500 meters, I stayed hidden and watched what was happening.”

During the raid, some assailants surrounded his house while others abducted ten women who were visiting, including six young girls and three nursing mothers. The nursing mothers were later released, but the six girls and the 16-year-old boy were taken into the bush. Sarki returned home after the attackers left to find his house ransacked, with N140,000 in cash and N1.2 million intended to purchase a motorcycle stolen. Fortunately, no one was injured despite gunshots fired through his son’s window.

Mobile policemen from the Kawu division later arrived to secure the scene. Sarki identified the abducted victims as Blessing Awu, 16-year-old David Ishaya, Abigail Kasere, Asabe Joshua, Talatu Jaba, and Agnes Kasare. The six girls were relatives visiting from Kubacha in Kaduna State for the funeral. Police collected empty bullet shells and recorded Sarki’s account before leaving.
