Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has shared insights from a private conversation with Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi regarding Nigeria’s ongoing forest insecurity and the fortified camps of armed bandits, Nigerian Tribune reports.
Obasanjo explained that he invited Gumi to his home after the cleric returned from visiting the bandit hideouts. Gumi reportedly described the conditions as far more severe than official accounts suggested and challenged claims that military and police forces had successfully infiltrated these strongholds.
During their discussion, Gumi highlighted the involvement of children aged 13 to 15 in banditry, noting that many were drugged and trained to carry weapons, making them both victims and active participants in violent acts. The cleric’s emotional recount of these situations emphasized the human toll of the crisis.
Obasanjo recounted Gumi’s warning about the fortified nature of the camps, stressing that intelligence-driven strategies are essential to avoid further loss of life. “He told me the bandits had fortified themselves, and claims of security forces entering were false. He cried over seeing 13 to 15-year-old boys, drugged and armed, caught up in violence,” Obasanjo said.
