Imani, a man from Rwanda, has shared his inspiring story of love and resilience after facing rejection from his family for marrying a woman with deformities on her legs. Despite the opposition, he says his affection for his wife, Domitila, has never wavered.
Imani met Domitila at church and noticed how others socially distanced themselves from her due to her physical condition. He befriended her, and over time, their friendship grew into love. After proposing twice, Domitila accepted his marriage proposal, believing that no one would ever marry her.
When Imani introduced Domitila to his parents, they initially appeared happy about the upcoming church wedding. However, their attitude changed when they saw her, declaring she was not “good-looking.” Undeterred, Imani went ahead with wedding plans, but none of his family or relatives attended. He even hired people to act as his family for the ceremony.
Following the wedding, his parents formally rejected him and forced him out of the family home, and even his friends distanced themselves. Despite these hardships, Imani remains committed to his wife and their love. He emphasizes that true love goes beyond physical appearances or societal expectations.
Imani has called on society to stop discriminating against people born with disabilities and instead embrace and support them with respect and compassion.
