Rose Wangui, a resident of Nyandarua, has shared her harrowing experience of marital hardship, revealing how she was forced to leave her children at home to provide for the family after her husband allegedly gave her permission to earn income through sex work.
According to Rose, she was raised by her grandmother after her mother abandoned her. Life was difficult, with her grandmother reportedly selling local alcohol (Changaa) to make ends meet. Rose said she helped sell the alcohol at home, which is where she first met her future husband at the age of 16. The two later married.
She described how life became increasingly challenging after she became pregnant. Her husband, she said, frequently returned home drunk and would beat her, forcing her to flee back to her grandmother’s house at times. Even when he came to retrieve her, the abuse reportedly continued.
Rose explained that when her first child turned two, her husband told her he could not support the family alone and allegedly gave her permission to work on the streets to provide for the household. She recalled leaving him at home with their children while she went out to earn money, after which her husband would demand her earnings to fund his drinking.
The situation worsened when her husband reportedly tried to coerce her into unwanted sexual acts. Rose ultimately decided to leave the home, renting her own place and living independently while caring for her children. After several years, her sister was released from custody, and the two women began living together to support the family.
Rose’s story highlights the struggles some women face in balancing family responsibilities, economic survival, and personal safety in difficult domestic circumstances.
