I Will Not Get Tired Of Bathing My Big Brother And Changing His Diapers Untill He Is Healed; Esther

Esther Wageni from Nyeri has shared her unwavering commitment to caring for her ailing brother, Wachira, who has been wheelchair-bound since a spinal illness in 2015. Despite the immense challenges, Esther says she will continue bathing him and changing his diapers until he recovers.

Wachira’s health deteriorated despite three years of treatment and two surgeries in Kenya, leaving him unable to perform basic tasks. After witnessing her husband’s condition, Wachira’s wife reportedly left him, taking their children with her. With no one else to step in, Esther made the difficult decision to leave her job at UNICEF to care for her brother full-time.

Esther admits the journey has been physically demanding. She herself developed a spine problem from lifting and attending to Wachira, resulting in a three-month hospitalization. During that period, hired caregivers mistreated her brother, reinforcing her resolve to personally provide his care until he recovers.

She explains that bathing him and managing his incontinence has never been a concern, emphasizing that her priority is his recovery. Recently, a doctor recommended seeking treatment in India, estimating the cost at seven million Kenyan shillings.

Through community fundraising (harambee) and personal savings, Esther has raised four million shillings and is appealing to well-wishers to help cover the remaining three million to give her brother a chance at proper treatment abroad.
