The political climate in Rivers State has intensified following a sharp exchange between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and factional Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, in a video released on Viable TV.
Amaewhule, speaking with visible concern, highlighted the economic hardship faced by citizens and portrayed his Assembly faction as a source of hope amid the ongoing crisis. “Our people are looking up to us for Redemption, for Salvation in terms of what they are going through, the hardship they’re going through,” he stated, urging lawmakers to deliver decisive action and sincere representation rather than engage in political battles that offer no benefit to residents.
In response, Governor Fubara dismissed Amaewhule’s remarks as attempts to garner public sympathy and misrepresent the state’s political situation. He emphasised that citizens seek genuine governance, not “performative appeals wrapped in emotional expressions.” Fubara noted that his administration is aware of the economic challenges and has initiated several intervention programmes aimed at easing the burdens of residents.
The governor further warned that exploiting public hardship for political leverage undermines real progress. He argued that meaningful “redemption” and “salvation” would come through stability, unity, and uninterrupted governance, cautioning citizens against leaders who “speak of suffering while contributing to the instability that worsens it.”
Analysts say the ongoing conflict between the executive and legislative factions risks diverting attention from governance at a time when Rivers residents are struggling economically.
