When Families Cannot Afford Their Next Meal, Those In Power Are Welcoming Defectors – Obi

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over some of the names included in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s latest list of ambassadorial nominees, warning that the selections fail to reflect the pressing realities ordinary Nigerians face.

In a statement shared on his X account on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Obi said several nominees were unexpected and had sparked doubts about the standards applied in choosing individuals who are meant to represent Nigeria on the global stage. He stressed that ambassadorial roles demand competence, integrity, and a clear understanding of the country’s diplomatic priorities.

Obi noted that the country’s international image depends heavily on those appointed, making it crucial that nominees inspire confidence at a time when Nigeria is navigating economic and security challenges. He emphasised that such appointments should align with national interest, not political convenience.

The former governor also drew attention to the worsening economic burden on households across the country. According to him, many families are struggling to afford basic necessities due to rising food prices, weakened purchasing power, and growing financial pressure. He described the situation as deeply worrying and deserving of urgent government action.

Obi criticised leaders who, despite these challenges, appear disconnected from the struggles of everyday Nigerians. He expressed concern that political officeholders continue to organise ceremonies, welcome defectors, and exchange gifts at a time when many citizens cannot afford their next meal. “When families cannot afford their next meal, those in power are welcoming defectors and exchanging gifts as though Nigeria is not burning,” he wrote.
