“Tinubu Must Be Very Intentional About Who’s Going To Become The Next Minister of Defence” —Tony Ofoyetan

Legal practitioner and political analyst Tony Ofoyetan has stressed that the appointment of Nigeria’s next Minister of Defence is critical to addressing the nation’s ongoing security challenges. He emphasized that the individual must be decisive, independent, and focused on prioritizing the national security agenda above all other interests.

In a discussion posted on TVC News’ official YouTube channel, Ofoyetan highlighted intelligence failures within the military, noting that inaction on available intelligence—especially reports preceding attacks—reflects a breakdown in command execution rather than lack of information. He stated, “Mr. President must be very intentional about who is going to become the next Minister of Defence,” underscoring the importance of the appointment for restoring operational effectiveness.

Ofoyetan also linked the insecurity crisis to economic exploitation, asserting that foreign actors often arm bandits to destabilize communities and gain access to mining sites. He argued that the Federal Government should assert full control over all mining sites to remove avenues for external interference, a step he sees as essential for curbing violence fueled by foreign interests.

Additionally, the analyst called for a coordinated “joining” strategy in military operations across the Northwest, Northeast, and other regions. He explained that simultaneous operations are necessary to dismantle criminal networks hiding in forested areas, warning that uncoordinated efforts only allow criminals to evade capture and move to unsecured locations.
