Lagos Landlord Arrested for Allegedly Destroying Tenant’s Property Over Dispute

A 66-year-old Lagos landlord, Erastus Thorpe, has been arrested following allegations that he removed the roof of his tenant’s apartment and used mystical means to summon heavy rainfall, causing significant damage to the tenant’s belongings.

The incident reportedly took place on October 28, 2025, at Major Akinola Street in Agbelekale, Ipaja, following a dispute over a quit notice. According to reports from P.M. EXPRESS, Thorpe allegedly demanded that tenant Abdulwahab Adesina vacate the apartment, but the tenant insisted that any eviction must follow legal procedures.

During the dispute, Thorpe allegedly removed the roof of the apartment, resulting in rain destroying property valued at over N1.5 million. The matter was reported to Area P Command, Ipaja, and Thorpe was promptly arrested and charged with malicious damage to property and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace under Sections 339 and 168(d) of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.

Thorpe pleaded not guilty to both charges. The prosecutor, Supol Josephine Ihkayere, requested a hearing date for the Police to present evidence. Presiding Magistrate L.A. Owolabi granted bail with two sureties, pending verification of livelihood, tax compliance, and residence details. The case was adjourned for mention, and Thorpe is currently remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Centre until bail conditions are met.
