Senator Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central lawmaker and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has reacted to claims surrounding the exit of Nigeria’s Minister of Defense, Abubakar Badaru, clarifying that the focus should be on ensuring experienced leadership at the ministry.
The clarification came after Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, announced that Badaru had resigned. Onanuga wrote on his official X handle that “President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation. President Tinubu will likely inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week.” The announcement follows President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency, which he plans to elaborate on in due course.
In response, Shehu Sani emphasized that whether the minister resigned or was removed is secondary. “Whether the Defence Minister resigned or was removed, the Defence Ministry needs an experienced hand to lead in view of the exigencies of today,” he wrote on X. He highlighted Nigeria’s historical contributions to international peacekeeping, including participation in the First and Second World Wars, and missions in the DRC, Tanzania, Lebanon, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Sudan.
The former lawmaker’s comments underscore the need for capable leadership to navigate current security challenges, reflecting broader concerns about national defense readiness in Nigeria.
