Senator representing Abia South, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has commented on President Bola Tinubu’s directive to withdraw police protection from VIPs, revealing that the policy does not impact him as he never used such security detail.
In an interview with Arise News, Abaribe explained that although police protection was offered to VIPs, he personally chose not to use it. “I don’t use police. We were all offered; I didn’t use it. Nothing is being withdrawn from me. You have to have it first for it to be taken away from you,” he stated.
On the broader implications of the withdrawal, particularly the plan to reassign around 11,000 policemen previously assigned to VIP protection to tackle insecurity, Abaribe questioned the logic. “Maybe you can ask the policemen who withdrew them how that would make people safer. How does that make people safer?” he added.
He also noted that the reassigned officers would need refresher combat training, as many have not faced such duties in years. “You have to give the person fresh training. You have to let him know how to do this. You have to reorient the person,” Abaribe concluded.
