As Long As Money Is Being Absconded And Spent At Will, We Will Keep Crying Over Insecurity – Mahdi

Public affairs analyst Shehu Mahdi has highlighted financial mismanagement and lack of local involvement as key drivers of Nigeria’s worsening security situation. Speaking on The Morning Brief on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Mahdi stressed that meaningful solutions require both accountability and decentralised policing.

According to Mahdi, communities remain vulnerable because the current centralised policing system struggles to respond effectively to local threats. He argued that creating state police would bring security closer to citizens, enabling quicker, more informed responses to banditry, kidnappings, and other violent attacks.

Mahdi further noted that government accountability is crucial for improving security. “Expectations are high for leaders to fulfil their responsibilities, especially where citizens depend heavily on authorities for protection,” he said. He emphasized that without strong supervision and inclusion of local stakeholders, communities will continue to suffer.

Financial mismanagement, Mahdi argued, is a major barrier to progress. “As long as we don’t bring in critical stakeholders, and as long as the government doesn’t discharge its responsibilities, and as long as money is being absconded and spent at will, we will keep crying over insecurity, and insecurity will keep challenging us,” he warned.
