Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has stirred discussions after commenting on the resignation of Mohammed Badaru Abubakar as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence. Sani stressed that the country urgently requires a seasoned and strategically minded leader to guide the Defence Ministry amid ongoing security challenges.
Following Badaru’s exit, political and security circles have debated the next steps for Nigeria’s defence leadership. Sani noted that the key concern is not the circumstances of the former minister’s departure, but ensuring that a competent successor is appointed to confront rising insecurity across the nation.
“Whether the Defence Minister resigned or was removed, the Defence Ministry needs an experienced hand to lead in view of the exigencies of today. Nigeria historically fought in the First and Second World Wars, contributed forces for the restoration of peace in DRC Congo, Tanzania, Lebanon, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Sudan, etc. The nation should be able to defend itself against these criminal bandits and terrorists,” Sani remarked.
Known for his candid perspectives on national security, Sani highlighted that Nigeria’s legacy of military engagement and global peacekeeping contrasts sharply with its current internal vulnerabilities. He emphasized that the next Defence Minister must combine operational insight with political will to restore confidence in the country’s security architecture.
Sani’s statement has generated reactions from security analysts and political commentators alike, many agreeing that Nigeria’s Defence Ministry requires leadership with proven expertise and actionable strategies to address complex security threats.
