It’s only in Nigeria that someone charged for murder fills forms in prison and becomes senator—Mahdi

Public affairs analyst Shehu Mahdi has raised concerns over the worsening insecurity in Nigeria, linking it to systemic neglect in key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and governance. His comments come as incidents of violent attacks continue across states including Kebbi, Kwara, and Niger.

During an interview with Channels Television, Mahdi criticized the political system, highlighting what he described as a culture that allows individuals with questionable pasts to assume public office. He cited the case of a person previously charged with murder who, while in prison, submitted nomination forms for a senatorial seat and was eventually elected, with the public seemingly overlooking his past crimes.

“It’s only in Nigeria that somebody who was in prison, charged for the murder of a cabinet minister, collected his nomination form and filled it while in prison, and he became a senator,” Mahdi stated, underscoring what he sees as flaws in accountability and political oversight.

The analyst linked rising insecurity to broader governance issues, emphasizing that neglect of essential public sectors contributes to the country’s vulnerability to violence. His remarks have fueled discussions on the need for reform in political processes and public administration.
