Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has reacted to the resignation of Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, emphasizing that the Ministry urgently requires a more experienced leader to address the country’s escalating security challenges.
In a statement shared on his verified Twitter account, Sani stressed that Nigeria’s long history of military strength and global peacekeeping contributions contrasts sharply with its current inability to decisively tackle banditry and terrorism. “Whether the Defence Minister resigned or was removed, the Ministry needs an experienced hand to lead in view of the exigencies of today,” he noted.
Sani recalled Nigeria’s participation in the First and Second World Wars and peacekeeping missions in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Lebanon, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Sudan. He argued that a nation with such a proud military legacy should not struggle to contain criminal elements within its own borders.
Highlighting the persistent threat posed by bandits and terrorists, the former senator pointed out that communities continue to suffer from abductions and violent attacks. He stressed that the next Defence Minister must possess strategic insight, operational experience, and strong political will to restore confidence in the nation’s security framework.
