“Those Who Are Statutorily Entitled To Police Protection Will Still Have It – Force PRO Clarifies

The Nigeria Police Force has assured that government officials legally entitled to police protection will continue to receive security despite the ongoing withdrawal of VIP escorts.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Ben Hundeyin, made the clarification in an interview with Channels Television. He explained that the enforcement of President Bola Tinubu’s directive primarily affects private individuals, celebrities, and businesspersons, while governors, judges, and other statutory officeholders will still be protected.

Hundeyin emphasized that the measure is rooted in legal compliance, not favoritism. “Those who are statutorily entitled to police protection will still have their police protection,” he said, adding that the law clearly defines who qualifies for such security. He further noted that misconceptions about selective enforcement have contributed to public confusion.

Addressing concerns about the misuse of police personnel, Hundeyin reiterated that the Nigerian Police is committed to reforming VIP escort practices and ensuring officers are not exploited for personal service. Regarding reports of widespread deployment for VIP duties, he clarified that 11,566 officers were withdrawn, disputing claims suggesting numbers as high as 100,000.

The Force PRO encouraged Nigerians to report any unauthorized VIP protection and affirmed that enforcement will continue transparently.
