The Osun State PDP governorship primary held on Tuesday ended in confusion and tension, with reports of confrontations, injuries, and accusations of political interference overshadowing the emergence of Adedamola Adebayo as the party’s 2026 candidate.
Adebayo secured 919 votes from accredited delegates, but the event proceeded without Governor Ademola Adeleke and several key party leaders, deepening questions about unity within the party. The governor had earlier announced his resignation from the PDP, though his name still appeared on the ballot — a situation the committee later clarified, saying any votes cast for him would not count.
Tension escalated shortly after voting ended. The Speaker of the Osun House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, reportedly confronted individuals who remained within the premises, sparking a physical altercation during which a man believed to be an INEC official was assaulted. The situation worsened outside the venue when a bus carrying visitors from Oyo State was stopped by a crowd. One passenger, Wakili Aderemi, said his group was mistakenly targeted. “We were leaving the premises when some people bombarded us,” he said, maintaining they were in Osogbo for a transport union meeting and had no political agenda.
In response, Speaker Egbedun accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of meddling in Osun PDP affairs and warned against any external influence aimed at destabilising the state chapter. The primary took place amid a wider national PDP leadership crisis, with conflicting instructions issued by different factions on whether the exercise should hold — the same crisis Adeleke cited in his resignation.
