Nigerian entrepreneur Deborah James has revealed that she personally covered nearly all expenses for her three wedding ceremonies—traditional, white wedding, and court marriage—after her fiancé faced financial setbacks before their 2019 weddings.
In an interview on the Talk-to-B podcast, James explained that she funded the ceremonies despite her husband having no income at the time because she believed her support could help him regain financial stability. She described investing in the events as a decision based on hope rather than immediate reality.
“I had businesses running, including an herb store, a boutique, and imports from Turkey and China,” James said. “So financially, I could support him. I didn’t see the cost as a challenge back then. But looking back, I would not make that same decision again.”
James cautioned other women against making similar one-sided financial sacrifices, noting that such arrangements can often lead to resentment rather than appreciation. She emphasized the importance of evaluating current circumstances rather than potential outcomes before committing significant personal resources.
