“When Boko Haram Moved To The Sambisa Forest, They Allowed The Fulani To Graze Their Livestock–VP

Vice President Kashim Shettima has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral photograph showing him dining with Fulani community members. Speaking at the 2025 International Press Institute Nigeria Conference in Abuja, Shettima stressed that the image has been misrepresented online and does not indicate any support for criminal groups.

Shettima explained that the photograph was part of legitimate community engagement aimed at understanding local challenges in northern Nigeria. He emphasized that such interactions are essential for addressing grievances, fostering cooperation with security agencies, and preventing violence.

The Vice President also provided historical context regarding the Fulani in areas affected by Boko Haram. He noted that when the insurgents moved to the Sambisa Forest, Fulani herders were initially allowed to graze livestock in the region. However, once Boko Haram discovered that some Fulani were sharing intelligence with the Nigerian military, the militants expelled them and confiscated their livestock.

Shettima urged journalists and social media users to verify information before sharing content, warning that misinformation can harm reputations and undermine national security. He emphasized that public discourse should be based on verified facts to prevent misinterpretation and unnecessary tension.
