According to NTA, Defence Minister nominee, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), has raised fresh concerns over the escalating insecurity across the Sahel region, warning that developments in Mali and neighbouring countries pose a direct and growing threat to Nigeria’s internal security. Speaking during his Senate screening, Musa highlighted that the deterioration of stability in the Sahel has emboldened extremist groups, armed militias, and criminal networks, many of whom are now seeking to expand their activities into Nigeria.
According to Musa, the Sahel—stretching from Mauritania through Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Chad—has become a hotbed for terrorism due to political instability, military coups, weak governance, and external interference. He noted that the situation in Mali, where extremist groups continue to gain ground despite international interventions, serves as a warning of how quickly security can collapse when governments fail to maintain control.
“The Sahel is heating up, and you can see what they are doing to Mali,” Musa told lawmakers, emphasizing that the unchecked activities of jihadist factions and armed bandits in the region have created a ripple effect that is beginning to wash across Nigeria’s borders. He explained that as pressure mounts on these groups in Mali and Burkina Faso, many of them are displaced and begin migrating toward countries with more porous borders—Nigeria being one of the primary targets.
Musa warned that Nigeria must not underestimate the mobility and adaptability of these groups. He said foreign fighters often merge with local bandits, share tactics, and introduce more advanced weaponry, thereby escalating the level of violence. The influx of sophisticated weapons from Libya and the spread of extremist ideology across the Sahel, he added, have further complicated Nigeria’s security landscape.
He called for stronger regional cooperation through platforms like ECOWAS, MNJTF, and bilateral defence agreements with neighbouring countries. According to him, Nigeria must adopt proactive strategies rather than wait until militants fully establish operational bases within its borders. Enhanced intelligence sharing, coordinated border patrols, and early warning systems, he said, are fundamental to preventing the Sahel crisis from spilling deeper into the country.
