The Abia State Government has refuted claims that Governor Alex Otti is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following his recent meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to a report by Punch Newspaper, Governor Otti’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, explained that the visit to the President was strictly to discuss the case of detained Indigenous People of Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Ekeoma stated that the meeting took place shortly after Governor Otti visited Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre on November 30, 2025. He noted that the governor has been consistent in pursuing diplomatic and lawful steps over the past two years to secure Kanu’s release.
The clarification followed allegations by former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Charles Ogbonnaya, who claimed the meeting with President Tinubu was part of political negotiations ahead of the 2027 elections.
Ekeoma dismissed the allegation as politically motivated, insisting that Otti remains focused on justice and due process rather than partisan maneuvering. He added that although some APC leaders have expressed interest in having Otti join their party, the governor is currently prioritizing the sensitive issue concerning Kanu’s detention.
