Former Big Brother Naija Season 10 housemate, Kayode Oladele, popularly known as Kaybobo, has shared how his mother initially opposed his passion for basketball, a setback he says was overcome thanks to the intervention of his coach. The reality TV star made the revelation while speaking to members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ekiti State chapter, during an event held in Ado-Ekiti.
Kaybobo, who hails from Ado-Ekiti, recounted the early days of his sporting journey, which saw him play basketball for Christ School and All Souls Secondary School. These formative experiences, he said, laid the foundation for his later international exposure in basketball and helped shape the athlete and public figure he has become.
“My mummy did not want me to play basketball then. It was through the intervention of Coach Awojurin that convinced her. If not, I would not have reached the level I am today,” Kaybobo said, emphasizing the pivotal role his coach, Tayo Awojurin, played not only in honing his skills but also in persuading his mother to support his ambitions.
The BBNaija star revealed that the challenges he faced as a young athlete inspired him to establish the Kaybobo Youth Foundation, a platform aimed at nurturing young talent in Ekiti State. Through the foundation, he plans to provide guidance, resources, and opportunities for youths who aspire to become professional athletes or pursue careers in creative fields such as arts and entertainment.
“My decision to establish a youth foundation stems from my desire to give back to my community. I want to help talented Ekiti youths discover and develop their skills to reach professional levels in sports and creative industries,” he explained.
Kaybobo also disclosed that the foundation intends to broaden its scope beyond sports to include initiatives in fashion, entertainment, tourism, and arts. He envisions creating an ecosystem that will foster creativity, innovation, and professional development for young people in the state.
During the event with SWAN, Kaybobo presented 20 customized caps to the members as a token of appreciation for their role in promoting sports journalism and development in Ekiti. He assured the association that the foundation would continue collaborating with them to advance sports initiatives in the state.
The reality star expressed optimism about the potential of Ekiti youths, noting that with proper mentorship and access to resources, many young athletes and creative talents can achieve national and international recognition.
“This is just the beginning. My aim is to ensure that every young person with a dream in sports, arts, or entertainment has the support they need to succeed. Ekiti has incredible talent, and we want to make sure it is recognized,” Kaybobo said.
By sharing his personal story of overcoming parental skepticism and leveraging the support of a mentor, Kaybobo hopes to inspire young people to pursue their passions despite obstacles. His commitment to community development through the Kaybobo Youth Foundation demonstrates a strong desire to create lasting opportunities for the next generation of athletes and creatives in Ekiti State.
With the foundation’s programs and strategic partnerships, Kaybobo is positioning himself not just as a former reality TV star but as a proactive champion of youth empowerment and talent development in his home state.
