Fast-rising Nigerian singer Fola has opened up about his journey into the music industry, revealing that his path to success began far from the spotlight, inside his father’s small betting shop.

Speaking in a recent interview, the singer reflected on his modest background and the struggles he faced before gaining recognition. According to Fola, his passion for music was ignited during his high school years, even though he had no clear pathway into the industry at the time.

“I started making music in high school, not professionally, but I had a band I was playing with,” he said.

While music interested him early on, Fola admitted that the lack of financial resources made it difficult to take the dream seriously. After completing his education, reality set in quickly as he struggled to find opportunities that could support his ambitions. At one point, he didn’t even have a mobile phone of his own, relying on a friend’s device to work on his music ideas and stay connected.

The situation forced him to focus on survival first. With limited prospects in Ibadan, where he was based at the time, Fola decided to support himself by working at his father’s betting shop. He explained that the job, though demanding, helped him build discipline and save towards his future.

“With limited opportunities in Ibadan, I decided to work at a small bet shop owned by my dad. I worked as a manager and cashier so I could save some money for myself,” he explained.

Fola noted that his decision to move to Lagos later became a defining moment in his career. The relocation exposed him to a larger music community and placed him closer to people who shared similar dreams. It was in Lagos that he crossed paths with the late singer Mohbad, whom he described as instrumental to his growth in the industry.

“Mohbad did a lot of things for me,” Fola said.

Through Mohbad, Fola was introduced to Bella Shmurda, another major turning point in his journey. The connection eventually led to an informal collaboration in 2022, despite the significant difference in their levels of popularity at the time. Fola said he was surprised by Bella Shmurda’s willingness to work with him without expecting any financial benefit.

“The gap in our profiles was big, but Bella agreed to the collaboration even though he wasn’t going to make any money from it,” he said.

The singer described that period as one that strengthened his belief in kindness, timing, and perseverance. He noted that small acts of support from established artists can make a lasting impact on emerging talents who are still finding their footing.

Reflecting on how far he has come, Fola expressed deep gratitude for the progress he has made so far. From managing a betting shop and borrowing phones to gaining industry recognition, he sees his story as a reminder that success often comes from patience and consistency.

“I thank God for where we are today,” he said.

Fola’s story highlights the realities faced by many young creatives navigating the Nigerian music industry, showing that humble beginnings, resilience, and meaningful connections can eventually lead to breakthrough moments.
