Fresh information has emerged on the reasons behind the postponement of the nomination meeting to select a successor to the vacant Awujale of Ijebuland stool by the Fusengbuwa ruling house.
The development comes amid growing interest in the succession process following the death of the revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who passed away in July 2025 at the age of 91. Reports indicate that more than 60 princes are currently jostling for the throne.
The Fusengbuwa ruling house, which is next in line to produce the Awujale, had earlier fixed Monday, December 15, 2025, for its nomination meeting. The plan was formally announced on December 11, 2025, in a notice signed by the family’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ogidan. The notice stated that the meeting would hold at Bisrod Hall, GRA, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
According to the guidelines issued ahead of the meeting, only accredited members of the ruling house were permitted to attend. Each aspirant was expected to be nominated and seconded by two family representatives, while the candidates themselves were barred from being physically present. The family also urged participants to conduct themselves peacefully and orderly throughout the process.
However, the Nomination Committee later announced a postponement. In a statement addressed to members of the Fusengbuwa ruling house, the committee said the decision was taken due to circumstances beyond the family’s control.
“Due to circumstances beyond the family’s control, the Fusengbuwa Ruling House Awujale nomination meeting scheduled for Monday, December 15, 2025, has been postponed. The new date will be announced shortly. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause,” the statement read.
Speaking exclusively on the matter, the Chairman of the Fusengbuwa ruling house, Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, explained that the postponement followed an intervention by the Ogun State Government aimed at ensuring the process is free from errors that could lead to legal challenges.
Owoyemi, a former National President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, dismissed claims that the delay was linked to any particular aspirant, including Fuji musician Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM1, whose eligibility had been questioned in some quarters.
“The postponement of the nomination meeting has nothing to do with any individual, far from that,” he said. “What actually happened is that we received a summons from the state government for a meeting on Tuesday. The meeting is to ensure that everything is done properly so that the selection process does not become a fertile ground for litigation or generate legal controversy. It is a matter of comparing notes and ensuring that we cross our Ts and dot our Is. We appreciate this because it will improve our standards and ensure that the process is flawless. There is nothing to worry about.”
Also speaking, the Vice Chairman of the ruling house, Prof. Fassy Yusuf, corroborated Owoyemi’s explanation, noting that the government had scheduled a meeting involving key stakeholders in the succession process.
“There are certain things we have not done, so the government has scheduled a meeting with us for Tuesday. The government will meet with the ruling house, the kingmakers and the Awujale Interregnum Committee. It is to ensure that everything is in order, and the outcome of this meeting will determine when next we will hold the nomination meeting,” he said.
Prof. Yusuf further disclosed that no fewer than 60 princes have indicated interest in succeeding the late monarch.
The race to produce a new Awujale reportedly intensified after the local government gave the Fusengbuwa ruling house a 14-day ultimatum to submit names of eligible candidates for consideration.
