Firefighters in Serbia were astonished after discovering a Virgin Mary painting completely untouched in the rubble of a family home destroyed by fire.
The incident occurred in the town of Senta in northern Serbia, where a blaze consumed almost everything inside the house.
Despite the widespread damage, the Virgin Mary icon, regarded by the homeowners as a powerful Christian symbol of faith and hope, was found unharmed among the charred remains. Firefighter Nenad Matijasevic recovered the painting of the Holy Mother while working to extinguish the fire.
Serbia’s Interior Ministry described the discovery as a miracle, saying: “In moments when they fight the fire, firefighters save memories, and restore faith and those things that mean the most to people.

“This is not just a miracle, this is a calling, this is humanity, and this is the reality of firefighters.” Similar moments of what many believe to be divine intervention have been reported during fires in other parts of the world.
Last year, residents of a small town in Guatemala found that almost all the books in a local shop had been destroyed by fire, except for several Bibles, which were left intact.
A firefighter from the force in Chiquimula, Guatemala, recalled the moment, saying: “I was with a volunteer colleague from Estanzuela, and he says to me, ‘The word of God is incredible because the Bibles are intact.’”
He added: “Seriously. The Bibles are intact, and it’s something that we really can’t put into words.” Another account of a Bible surviving extreme circumstances dates back to World War I, when a soldier claimed a bullet-ridden Bible saved his life.
Private Leslie Friston, who served with the Royal Army Medical Corps, was blinded and suffered respiratory problems following a gas attack in 1917.
According to his account, the damage could have been far worse if not for the Bible he kept at his bedside, which he believed played a role in saving his life.
